GameCentral looks at all the new board games and RPGs that were revealed at the Gen Con 2022, the largest tabletop gaming convention in the world.

When it comes to video games, the summer’s drought is now at its peak. However, during that month, the month of August is a very busy month. While fans in the UK are getting hyped for Pokemon Trading Card Game World Championships, on August 17 last weekend saw the largest tabletop gathering in the world, Gen Con, take place in Indianapolis, USA.

In 2020 Gen Con was cancelled and last year saw a reduced schedule, with many events moving on, so the years convention was back in full force. A huge crowd was in attendance, looking for new board games, role-playing games, card games, and deck-building games.

Because board games are more popular than ever, there were plenty of innovative designs and themes, not just the usual Tolkien-esque adventures. This is one of the most interesting things that caught our eye, and should start to become accessible in the next 12 months.

We’ve always been big fans of Wyrd Games, but games like Malifaux appeal to our outer or inner Goth with Tim Burton-esque aesthetics and colourfully creepy characters. Their new offering, Vagrantsong, is a cooperative and story-driven boss battler where you take the role of a tramp trapped on a supernatural ghost train, the Silver Ferryman.

In order to find the right type of character, like the ghost – a thorny dog – to fight the haints behind the train, select the same class or the givlable wolf or the Run Away with a safey dog, by choosing the ones with which he stands tow his razors. You can change your playstyle to different skills and techniques that you pick up. Feel free to hear the ghosts and experience the ghost of the Gatwick Express. You’ll never forget to ride the train, but you can still go there.

If that sounds too grim, the Cuphead design and rubber hose-limbed ghosts are all fun designs. And, for something new, try the Fox Sisters expansion.

Time for the release: Q3 2022.

From Richard Garfield, creator of Magic: The Gathering, and Justin Gary, creator of the Ascension: Deckbuilding Game, comes SolForge Fusion. Although it is considered the evolution of trading card games, it is a must for all who like decks to come with a hobby like playing cards and not for newcomers. For tournaments ready from the start, SolForge combines lane-based skills with decks made in the algorithm, so there are never the same two.

When you play the cards, it turns on the level of new powers and abilities. The first player to reduce the game’s health to zero wins. It’s a complex concept, but our love is the idea of creating such flexible decks, with the ability to mix cards together and play.

There are more than a touch of Tomb Raider to this 3-D game beast, which is impressive in its many pieces. You play as an adventurer in a central archaeological ruin, and use clay blocks to match puzzle patterns.

One to four players turn on the gridded floor of the temple, to test the two-dimensional outlines of the two-dimensional pattern and match the patterns on their game cards. To make more complicated designs attract more points and while the game is creative and therefore family friendly, it’s just how many times people are making a choice, so it’s more difficult to make the most of their designs.

Bark Avenue is a competitive delivery game for dogs in New York City. There are lots of things to unpack between poop scoops, since the short length of walking, the preferred doggie daycare and the number of dogs at once, should be balanced.

A map has to be sent for dog walking routes and the distance to walkies for the runner, so you can make a career successful and unlock new abilities. Don’t be late or it’s straight to the vets for you!

The date of release was September 2023.

A game that Gordon Ramsay would certainly approve of, Steam Up is a competitive 2-5 player collect and action management game with tasty dinner recipes. Bamboo steamers, filled with different types of dim sum, are stacked and placed on an escrow table with menu items – shrimp dumplings, meat dumplings, barbecue meat buns, sticky rice, and phoenix claws.

Players play characters from a beautifully illustrated card, such as the tiger, who’s a seafood lover or a piglet, and each round, perform acts like gaining and consuming food tokens to buy steamers or using Fortune cards to benefit themselves or to their opponents.

As long as you plan to develop a strategy, a Fate card is revealed to all players and potentially destroys the entire table. The game ends when a number of steamers is bought or the Fate deck is emptied. This is a short and fun game where the player who has the most hearty points wins.

Keepers really are a keeper (pic: Van Ryder Games).

This new game is like a cross between the board and the card game Photograph (Wind The Film). After you saw the aforementioned words, players must select one of the stunning photographic play cards they thought of the best represent them. For example, if you hear the word “tittle” and feel like playing a waterfall picture, you’ll get the word,’ it’s going to seem like you are talking about it.

The cards are shuffled so nobody knows who has the card whose whose, and then everybody votes on which one of the chosen images they think aligns best with the word, and then that image becomes a keeper and earns a point to the owner. No specific use of words does you need to defeat your opponents, therefore if you want to kill Dixit, this is the game for you.

The date of the release: Q3 2022.

The jewel of my gaming collection is 3D Catan; with half of the floor of the living room, it never fails to attract wonder from any tabletop gaming owner who visits the store. This newest incarnation of Catan sees players returning to the Ice Age, in helping first humans on migratory journey across the world, with the aim of developing their technology and culture.

It’s pretty much a reboot of The Settlers Of the Stone Age, but there are plenty of new ideas, strategies and adventures to keep new players and convert to placing tiles. Cities become furthest and mammoths roam free in this new standalone game, and we can’t wait to see how technology upgrades improve familiar mechanics.

A new release date is 3 o’clock. 2022.

Computers in cupboard boxes (pic: Hachette Games): computer in binaries.

I visited the first immersive theatre experience in London called Phantom Peak and couldn’t get enough of the steampunk Sherlock shenanigans. The Turing Machine has different features, and is a competitive deduction, where you question the proto-computer (made of cardboard) for a secret code.

Two sets of three perforated cards make the puzzles easier. As an expert cracker, there are seven million complex problems spanning a simple to complex puzzle.

Weirdwood Manor waits until you watch the board move (pic: Greyridge Games)

Almost dead in the list, and no mention of Cthulhu yet? Well, in the vicinity of today is a visit to Weirdwood. This is a cooperative board game where you and your group of intrepid companions battle to protect Weirdwood Manor and its inscrutable ruler, Lady Weirdwood, from an invading monster and his clockwork scarab minions.

The circular spinning board isn’t only cool but it controls a very good temporal mechanic, that isn’t necessarily as simple as it is initially. All with unique abilities, there are six characters to play. Three of them must travel through the mansions in one-size-fits-all in one single room. In a game like that, cards can perform chains for powerful attacks in order to act differently.

When the monster turns turns they can use their own custom deck of cards, so they can grow stronger quickly. Weirdwood Manor is an accessible, but tactical game, built in unpredictability – it’s necessary for you to work together before the time run out.

Dragonbane will soon come in English (pic: Free League)

It is a farce as Dungeons & Dragons, but it was originally launched in 1982 in Sweden. Today, Drakar Och Demoner is celebrating his 40th anniversary.

Dragonbane is a classic fantasy game game, full of magic, mystery and adventure. Now it’s streamlined for fast and furious campaigning. We hope to see some new illustrations from artist Johan Egerkrans, the games famous magnolia and lilac allowing for days-long campaigns or quick adventures that can be played in an afternoon.

Coming back for Kickstarter soon.
