A takeover at Magill Estate Kitchen Housewarming Series is a new monthly event at Magill Estate Kitchen (MEK), set to feature 12 guest chefs from around the country over the next 12 months. It kicks off this Thursday, July 28, with Jake Nicolson of Brisbane’s acclaimed Sichuan- and Cantonese- inspired diner Donna Chang joining MEK’s executive chef Scott Huggins on the pass. They’ll plate up a five-course yum cha-style lunch and dinner set against the beautiful vines of Penfolds’ Magill Estate cellar door. The chefs will be turning out Moreton Bay bug dumplings; Queensland mud crab dumplings; scallop and prawn wontons; pan-fried cumin lamb buns; prawn and wild scampi toast with caviar; and more. Tickets are $90 (plus drinks) and available online.

Out of the ashes… Earlier this month, Brompton distillery door Long Story Short was left devastated by a fire that started at a neighbouring property, forcing the business to shut up shop for a few months. While the team rebuilds, they’ll be popping up at Cafe Luna (every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5pm) and The Stag Public House (every Sunday from midday) over the next month, pouring three new cocktails, including the milk-washed Electric Heater featuring the brand’s Storytellers gin and lemon verbena.

A Pakistani tea house in the Central Market Adelaide Central Market has welcomed a new Producer in Residence, Lahore Tea House, for the next three weeks (until August 6). The stall, named after the city in Pakistan, is turning out traditional and Western-inspired Pakistani snacks and street food (think “samosa pasties”, chaat and gulab jamun), plus drinks like masala chai, cardamom tea and date and almond shakes; and weekend specials such as chicken biryani, omelette paratha wraps and saffron and pistachio kafta kebabs. Owner Muhammad Aman Ullah and his family, who recently moved to Australia, are starting this project with the support of Thrive Refugee Association.

Broadsheet Access members get special tables at busy restaurants, tickets to exclusive events and discounts on food, coffee, brand offers and more.

Good Gilbert vs. Leigh Street Wine Room Leigh Street’s Good Time Sunday Winter Series continues next month with the team from Good Gilbert popping in for a lunchtime takeover on August 21. It’s going to be a battle of the wine bars, with each venue pouring diverse drops from their superlative wine lists and Good Gilbert chef Savannah Sexton popping in to cook alongside Leigh Street’s Peter Orr. Spots are strictly limited for the two sittings, so move quickly. Tickets are $80 and available online.

Winner winner fried chicken dinner Adelaide is currently surfing a very delicious fried chicken wave. The latest contender: Extra Fried Chicken, a crisp new spin-off of Peel Street roast chicken shop Extra Chicken Salt, available only for takeaway (and on Uber Eats) or dine-in on weekend evenings. The menu includes a range of burgers, plus chips, mash and gravy, and fried chicken pieces. The ’70s-style diner opened at the close of 2020 under owners Peter De Marco (Valentino’s, Chicco Palms, Chicken & Pig) and his long-time business partner Phillip Tropeano to celebrate the old-school chook shop, complete with rotisserie chickens and all the trimmings (think roasted carrots, peas, gravy boats and mash potato).
